Description
The Hemlock Bridge, built in 1857, is a 109-foot Paddleford truss strengthened with laminated wooden arches. It was built on granite abutments since it was located in a floodplain. It is located three miles northwest of East Fryeburg, Maine over an old channel of the Saco River. It carries Hemlock Bridge Road over the Old Course Saco River, near the western shore of Kezar Lake in eastern Fryeburg. The bridge was reinforced to carry local traffic in 1988. Hemlock Bridge was designated as a Maine Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2002.
