The Very Large Array is located on the Plains of San Agustin. The Northeast part of the Plains of San Agustin, was, thousands of years ago, a large intermontane lake and is now down drooped graben (rift valley between two faults) and is bordered by uplifted volcanic masses. The San Mateo and Luera Mountains Pelona Mounts are southeast of the Plain. The Horse Mountain and Datel Mountains are northwest. The e levation is 7,030 feet
